ADJUSTMENT
WARNING
When the brake pushrod stroke exceeds the legal brake adjustment limit on a vehicle, there is likely
a mechanical problem with the foundation brake components or the adjuster is improperly installed.
Manually adjusting an automatic slack adjuster to bring the pushrod stroke within legal limits is
likely masking a mechanical problem. Adjustment is not repairing. In fact, continual adjustment of
automatic slack adjusters may result in premature wear of the adjuster itself. Further, the improper
adjustment of some automatic slack adjusters may cause internal damage to the adjuster thereby pre-
venting it from functioning properly. Failure to follow this warning could cause injury to personnel and
damage to equipment.
NOTE
If a new slack adjuster or air brake chamber has been installed, perform steps 1 through 7 using manufac-
tured automatic slack adjuster template (WP 0310 00).
1.
Measure the length of the slack adjuster (1) with the template (2). The marks by the holes in the small end of the
template indicate the length of the slack adjuster.
