TM 9-2320-270-10 OPERATING WINCHES – CONTINUED Oparating Both Winches at the Ssme Time (low speed only) 1. 2. Pull engine throttle control (2) as far back as it will go (toward cab). Move NO. 1 WINCH low speed lever (6) and NO. 2 WINCH low speed lever (5) at the same time. Move both levers forward to pay out cable and backward to take up cable. NOTE The winches will operate in opposite directions at the same time in low speed only. Paying  Out  Winch  Cable WARNING Always wear heavy gloves when handling winch cables. Never let a cable run through your hands. Broken and frayed cable wires can cause painful hand injuries. 1. Direct crew member to walk out with cable, pull it tight to take up slack, and signal when there is enough cable out to reach payload. 2. Operate winch and pay out cable, watching for crew members signal. Securing  Winch  Cable  After  Winching  Operation 1. 2. Direct crew member to disconnect winch cable from payload and keep cable taut while you take it up. Take up cable while crew member watches drum to make sure cable winds evenly on drum without tangles, kinks, or twists. Cable coils should be tight and close together on drum. 2-97
