CHAPTER 12
STEERING SYSTEM
BDAR FIXES SHALL BE USED ONLY IN COMBAT
AT THE DISCRETION OF THE COMMANDER
AND SHALL BE REPAIRED BY STANDARD MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES
AS SOON AS PRACTICABLE AFTER THE MISSION IS COMPLETED.
Section I. GENERAL
12-1.
GENERAL
The steering systems consist of steering wheels, steering columns, steering gear
assemblies, hydraulic pumps,
linkage such as tie rods and idler arms, kingpins,
steering arms and knuckles, connectors, fittings, and bushings.
These parts must
be adjusted, alined, and lubricated to ensure the operator proper control of the
wheeled vehicle.
Steering malfunctions can be detected by:

Abnormal darting to the left or right without any steering wheel movement.
Excessive pulling on the wheel to the left or right.
No control at all.
Abnormal noises.
Front end chatter and erratic steering wheel movement.
ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE
Preconditions:
Vehicle brakes should be in working condition. The vehicle
must be capable of movement to assess the power train using this procedure.
Damage found on:
-Steering gear, pit-
man arm, drag link,
steering arm and
