TM 5-2420-222-20-2 STARTER NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH - CONTINUED ACTION LOCATION ITEM REMARKS REPAIR 7. Neutral safety If threads are damaged, using thread switch (1) restorer file, restore threads. INSTALLATION 8. Operator’s Range shift lever Make sure they are in neutral compartment and gearshift lever (TM 5-2420-222-10). WARNING Properly  installed  neutral  safety  switch  prevents  loader  backhoe  engine   from   starting   unless gearshift  lever  is  in  neutral.    During  installation,  begin  with  one  aluminum  shim  regardless  of quantity  removed.    Switch  must  be  tightened  to  proper  torque  each  time  a  shim  is  added  or removed to insure proper adjustment and prevent possible injury during engine starting. 9. Transmission top Aluminum shim or a. Screw in and tighten until snug using cover (2) shims (3) and 7/8-inch, 1/2-inch drive 12-point neutral safety deep socket and ratchet handle. switch (1) b. Using 7/8-inch, 1/2-inch drive 12- point deep socket and 0 to 150 foot- pound capacity torque wrench, tighten to 20 to 25 foot-pounds (27 to 34 N.m) of torque. 10. Neutral safety Two terminals (4) Using multimeter, check for continuity. switch (1) 11. Transmission Neutral safety a. Using 7/8-inch, 1/2-inch drive 12- cover (2) switch (1) and point deep socket and ratchet handle, aluminum shim or unscrew and take out. shims (3) b. If multimeter reading in step 10 shows continuity, add one more shim. c. Repeat steps 9 thru 11. d. If multimeter reading in step 10 shows open circuit, take off one shim and repeat steps 9 and 10. Multimeter reading after shim removal should show continuity only when gearshift lever is in neutral. 12. Two terminals (4) Connector (5) a. Push on. b. Take off tags. 2-474
