FRONT TIRES IN A DITCH General    Information: Frequently   a   truck   will   become   nosed   in   a   shell   hole   or   narrow   ditch   where   both lifting   and   pulling   forces   are   required   to   make   the   recovery.   If  the   nosed    truck is   equipped   with   a   winch,    use   the   winch   to   supply   the   pulling   force   and   an   A-frame for   the   lifting   force. Limitations: o   None Personnel/Time    Required: Materials/Tools: o   2   to   3   soldiers o   Timbers,   8   to   10   feet o   1-4   hours minimum o   Tow   chain,   20   feet Procedural    Steps: WARNING All   personnel   not   involved   in   the   recovery operation   shall   be   no   closer   to   the   vehicles than   the   longest   cable   used.   Death   or   serious injury   can   result   if   the   cable   breaks. 1. Build   an   A-frame   with   two   poles   long   enough   to   clear   the   front   of   the   truck once   it   is   raised. 2. Lash   the   poles   together   at   the   top   with   a   figure-eight   or   girth   hitch   as   shown below. 1 2 3 4 5 4-3
