WARNING
To avoid injury, eye protection and acid-resistant gloves must be worn
when working around batteries. DO NOT smoke, use open flame, make
sparks or create other ignition sources around batteries. If a battery is giv-
ing off gases, it can explode and cause injury to personnel. Remove all
jewelry such as rings, ID tags, watches, and bracelets. If jewelry or a tool
contacts a battery terminal, a direct short will result in instant heating or
electric shock, injury to personnel, and damage to equipment.
To avoid injury, battery box top cover must be removed after it is opened
to access batteries.
To avoid injury, eye protection, protective clothing, and gloves must be
worn when working around capacitors. Capacitors contain an electrolyte
that is a potassium hydroxide solution. Potassium hydroxide is highly cor-
rosive and can cause serious burns. If capacitor case becomes cracked,
leaking electrolyte can result in fumes that are hazardous to inhale. If elec-
trolyte makes contact with skin, eyes or clothing, take immediate action to
stop the corrosive burning effects. Failure to follow these procedures may
result in death or serious injury to personnel.
Remove all jewelry such as rings, ID tags, watches, and bracelets, when
working around capacitors. If jewelry or a tool contacts a capacitor termi-
nal, a direct short may result, causing instant heating and electric shock at
the point of short circuit. Damage to equipment and injury to personnel
could result.
CAUTION
To reduce battery damage, check battery box for corrosion (greenish/white
powder) and do not jerk or pull on battery cables during visual inspection.
NOTE
Vehicles equipped with arctic heater have four batteries and two capaci-
tors.
a. Release latches and open battery
box top cover. Remove top cover
from vehicle. Open bottom cover.
Check battery box for damaged or
missing batteries, capacitor(s), and
hold-downs.
b. Check for damaged or missing filler
caps.
c. Check for missing, broken, split or
frayed cables.
